¡Liquidaciones, atrás! ¿Compras por Internet? No no no, no nos tiente… Porque ya se anunció que la próxima edición del Manual de Diagnóstico y Estadística de las Enfermedades Mentales de los Estados Unidos incluirá a la compra compulsiva en su listado de trastornos psiquiátricos.
El por qué está en las estadísticas: la adicción a comprar está aumentando en número, tanto en Europa como América. De hecho, los estudios sitúan la cifra nacional de compradores patológicos en alrededor de un 3%, aunque hasta un 33% practica esta actividad de forma irreflexiva.
En los Estados Unidos, 6 de cada 100 mujeres no pueden resistirse a abrir su billetera aún cuando no lo precisen; y los hombres (dato que da por tierra con los prejuicios sexistas) castigan sus fondos con adquisiciones fuera de foco y sentido en un 5, 5% de los casos.
Otro de los motivos por los cuales los especialistas piensan en incluirlo en el catálogo de enfermedades mentales, es que la urgencia por gastar suele estar asociada con niveles elevados de depresión y ansiedad y a la presencia de otros trastornos del control de los impulsos, como el abuso de sustancias tóxicas o los trastornos alimentarios.
Para quienes comprar se transforma en obsesión, ir de compras (física o virtualmente a través de la Web) se convierte en una necesidad vital, irrefrenable en la que se dejan todo su tiempo y dinero. A cambio pierden: su economía, sus relaciones personales y familiares y, sobre todo, su autoestima.
Un grupo de investigadores estadounidenses, liderado por Lorrin Koran, de la Universidad de Stanford, llevó a cabo un trabajo por medio del cual establecieron la incidencia y las características de este trastorno de los impulsos.
“Nuestras primeras evidencias –destacan los expertos en el estudio- sugieren que los afectados por el comportamiento compulsivo de adicción a las compras suelen tener, además, niveles elevados de depresión y ansiedad cuando se les compara con los que no sienten esta urgencia por gastar.”
El trabajo, publicado recientemente en la revista especializada American Journal of Psychiatric, destaca que el número de casos está en ascenso. Entre paréntesis, valga un dato de otras tierras: en España, un informe reciente elaborado por la Unión de Consumidores de España (UCE), señala que una de cada tres personas compra más de lo que necesita.
Tras realizar entrevistas telefónicas a lo largo y ancho de los Estados Unidos a un total de 2.513 hombres y mujeres de 18 años o más, los expertos de Stanford pudieron comprobar que la patología es tan frecuente en el sexo femenino como en el masculino. Y que la mayoría de los compulsivos suele pagar sus adquisiciones con tarjetas de crédito.
Por otro lado, y después de 12 años investigando la adicción a las compras compulsivas, Lane Benson, psicóloga que ejerce su profesión en la ciudad de Nueva York, fundó una de las escasas páginas webs dedicadas a la adicción a las compras (www.stoppingovershopping.com).
En su programa se incluye un libro que ayuda a los afectados a identificar y explorar las causas que les empujan a comprar compulsivamente y, consecuentemente, les ofrece distintas herramientas para detener su adicción. Se explican además las consecuencias económicas, personales y familiares que tiene este trastorno.
También incluye un diario donde el paciente refleja el comportamiento y un CD que ofrece imágenes antiestrés, además de una guía para de meditación. Asimismo, existe la oportunidad de completar un test que ayuda a discernir un poco más si una persona tiene o no un problema de adicción compradora, y cuál es su nivel.
